Painting furniture is a great way to dip your feet into the pool of painting projects. The sense of pride you feel after you complete a DIY paint job is worth the effort. You can choose the piece size, and if the results aren’t quite what you want, it’s not difficult to start again. 21st Century Paints carries Benjamin Moore paint products and has a few tips to help make painting your furniture easier than you ever thought possible.
Any surface that you are painting must be cleaned thoroughly beforehand. For the paint to apply correctly, you must remove dust and residue from fingerprints or any other mess from daily use. You can clean wood furniture using water and a mild detergent or a stronger cleaning agent like denatured alcohol if the grime is putting up a fight. Follow up by sanding the entire piece, focusing on any significant imperfections. Make sure you remove any dust from the sanding before continuing to priming. We suggest Fresh Start® Undercoater & Primer/Sealer to help achieve the most flawless results.
The paint you use makes a world of difference. Oil, or alkyd-based paint, is an excellent choice for furniture as it cures a hard finish. A higher level of sheen is more durable and can stand up to everyday wear and tear better than less sheen. ADVANCE® Interior Paint – Semi Gloss has low VOC, so you can breathe easier and delivers outstanding coverage and hide.
An angled brush is the ideal brush to use if you’re confident about your painting ability. A High-quality angled brush makes it easy to reach even the tightest crevices and will require fewer brush strokes. Pieces with large, flat surfaces are easier to take on using a mini roller with an ultra-fine microfiber material. Be sure to brush or roll in a consistent direction to avoid unsightly brush or roller marks.
Using premium quality paint from Benjamin Moore gives you smooth, even results from the first coat on. While the brand’s paint provides excellent coverage, it’s never a bad idea to apply a second coat for the richest color and to help prevent chipping. Always make sure the first coat is completely dry before adding another. Beginning too soon will leave you with a thick, tacky mess. We suggest waiting at least 12 hours between coats, especially if the weather is humid.
